home.  Once again the kids were very well behaved.   The point of this story is that when you ask my kids about the trip.  They talk more about the student zoo, Lurray Caverns and the Gulfarium then they do about Disney World or Universal Studios.  It was a sweet irony, that we drove so that we could stop at Disney, but the side trips stole the show.  I realized then, that all the weekend trips I had taken with the kids to the light houses and parks in our area were actually more meaningful to them than the cruises or vacation that we had gone on.  Now every other weekend we get in the car and drive to someplace in NJ and make memories.

I'm a single dad with two unbelievably great daughters ages 6 and 11 who live in Monmouth County.

This past August we had to go to Fort Walton Beach Florida for a family reunion.  I decided to drive so that I could visit friends in N.C. along the way and take a few days at Disney with my daughters at the end of the trip. Turned out my 13 year old niece also needed a ride to the reunion because my brother couldn't make it.  I bought every kid entertainment item I could find and packed them into the Ford Escape.  Double checked our luggage,  jumped in the car and started to drive.  For our first leg of the trip we decided to go from NJ to Lurray VA. to see the caverns (we hit every rest stop and some Waffle Houses along the way).  To my surprise the kids were unbelievably well behaved and were actually enjoying the scenery.  Not once did my older daughter or niece say they were bored.  After 6 hours we got to Lurray and visited the caverns.  The look on my younger daughters face as we peered upon a true natural wonder was worth the trip alone.  We continued the drive to N.C.  and after a long day in the car went to sleep.  My N.C. friends are the best host and hostess ever and we enjoyed time by the pool and some fireworks at night.  We continued to Fort Walton Beach.  After the reunion we headed for Orlando, a six hour drive.  On the way we saw the Suwany River (of music fame Way down upon the Suwany River).  We stopped at a student run zoo located at Santa Fe community college in Gainesville, for about an hour and a half to break up our ride, and then continued to our hotel in Orlando.  After Three days of Universal and Disney.  It was time to drive
